Western Grid Simulation Integrating GridBanks

Alevo Analytics simulated the benefits of the GridBank’s efficient fast ramping energy storage technology in the US western grid. Alevo Analytics used historical Western grid data to evaluate the system benefits of future deployment of GridBanks co-located with coal-fired power plants throughout the Western grid in the year 2020. The simulation generated the following outcomes:

  • Improve base load profile efficiency of coal plants;
  • Enhancing overall emissions by displacing inefficient peaking units as well as the retirement of higher polluting units such as older coal plants in the Western grid;
  • Improve overall system cost to load, which includes the cost of serving load as well as the cost of providing reserve requirements.


Coal plants were then optimized to provide constant output with minimized ramping (this is only possible due to the services provided by GridBanks). This resulted in significant cost savings, realized with the co-located generation facility:

Simulation results further demonstrated cost savings and other environmental benefits achieved by co-locating Alevo GridBanks with coal plants. In the simulation, GridBank services were:

  • Frequency Regulation Up
  • Frequency Regulation Down
  • Time Shifting (night time load for baseload plants)
  • Peak Capacity
  • Spinning Reserves
